I...Crystal, that's actually a great question. <br /><br />I decided to use a bag for two reasons. First, I wanted to be sure to hold in the soil (the wicker was not a really tight weave) and second, I wanted to prevent the basket from rotting from the constant moisture in the soil. There are a couple drain holes poked in the bottom of the basket.<br /><br />Incidentally, this summer (2014) the bottom of the basket disintegrated. I picked it up and the bottom fell out.
